Coaching in an AI-Fuelled World: 3 Reasons It’s As Important As Ever

AI and Coaching

I am a fan of AI. I can see the huge benefits. This article is not about me trying to convince you of the perils of using AI. It is more about alerting you to its limits. And applying a balanced approach to the process of transformation you might be on the verge of (or stuck in the middle of). Here I share with you what I see as the 3 biggest reasons why coaching is ever-more relevant in this AI-fuelled world. And how the two can combine to enable you to make a more profound and sustainable change.

How AI Can Support Personal and Professional Growth

AI is undoubtedly revolutionising the way we live and work, offering tools that automate tasks, analyse data, and even provide tailored advice. From productivity apps to mental health chatbots, AI is increasingly stepping into domains traditionally led by humans. Here are some of the benefits of AI in connection with personal and professional transformation:

Accessibility to data and trends

AI provides instant access to a wealth of information, from industry trends to personal development resources. For example, career platforms like LinkedIn use AI to analyse job market trends, helping individuals identify high-demand skills and emerging opportunities. Similarly, personal growth apps offer insights into fitness, habits, or mindfulness practices, empowering people to make informed decisions.

Shortcutting research into new opportunities

Job seekers can save hours of research with AI-powered platforms that match them to roles based on their skills and goals. Tools like Glassdoor and Indeed use algorithms to surface relevant opportunities, while AI assistants can even analyse company cultures, salaries, and growth potential, helping users make smarter career moves.

Sharpening CVs and cover letters

AI writing assistants (like ChatGPT or Grammarly) can help craft tailored, polished CVs, resumes and cover letters. These tools can analyse job descriptions, suggest optimised language, and ensure alignment with industry standards, giving candidates a competitive edge in the job market.

Health and wellbeing monitoring

On the personal side, AI-powered health tools (like Fitbit or Apple Health) track sleep, exercise, and stress levels, providing actionable insights to improve wellbeing. By monitoring these metrics, individuals can make small, consistent changes that lead to long-term transformation.

Personalised learning and skill development

AI-driven platforms like Coursera offer personalised learning experiences, adjusting content to individual progress and preferences. Whether it’s learning a new language or mastering coding, AI ensures users stay on track and achieve their goals efficiently.

Why Coaching Is As Important As Ever

These tools however can only take you so far. Ultimately, we are human (and spiritual) beings and so, inevitably, AI has its limits. Over-reliance on AI tools and the standardisation associated with them can lead to results which lack true meaning, personality and depth. (Or no results at all if there are underlying fears and blocks holding someone back from making changes).

And so here are the 3 main reasons why I believe that coaching is as important than ever:

Reason #1: Intuition

Perhaps my biggest fear in this AI-fuelled world is that we become totally disconnected from our intuition. Our intuition is one of our greatest superpowers and gives us the ability to:

Tap into our own source of truth and higher guidance – particularly vital for anyone on a spiritual path and/or seeking a deeper connection to their true purpose here on earth

Cut through overthinking – information overload and a constant focus on data and thoughts can keep people stuck in a loop and in situations they desperately want to leave

Sense what is being felt – to listen more to the bodily cues which hold a wealth of information and insight and which can lead to deeper healing and energetic release

How AI Falls Short With Intuition

Lack of emotional depth: AI analyses inputs like language or tone but cannot detect subtle emotional cues, body language, or nonverbal communication.

Context blindness: AI struggles to fully understand the complexities of personal histories, cultural backgrounds, or unique life experiences that shape decision-making.

Rigid frameworks: AI relies on programmed algorithms and lacks the ability to ‘read between the lines’ or deviate from structured responses to address nuanced situations.

No gut instinct: AI doesn’t have the human ability to sense unspoken concerns, hesitation, or deeper truths that may not surface explicitly.

How Coaching Supports Intuition

Accessing and strengthening: Coaches with a more holistic approach will support you directly in accessing, listening to and acting upon your own intuition

Deep listening: Coaches will actively listen beyond the words you speak, picking up on your tone, energy, and any nonverbal cues which can help to uncover underlying blocks or beliefs.

Personalised insights: A coach can intuitively adapt their strategies and guidance based on your unique context, emotional state, and any unspoken needs.

Reason #2: Human Connection

When I work with clients on their values, one of the most common ones to emerge is human connection. As innately social beings, human connection is like our lifeblood.  We all saw and felt the impact of its removal during the pandemic.

Human connection is another vital element in the transformation process in terms of:

Feeling seen and heard: Personal and professional transformation requires a safe space where individuals feel truly understood, validated, and valued. Human connection fosters this sense of belonging and trust.

Empathy: Genuine empathy creates a foundation for exploring vulnerabilities, taking risks, and navigating the discomfort of change.

Holding the space: Transformation often involves deep emotional work. A supportive human presence helps individuals process emotions, build confidence, and stay resilient through challenges.

Authentic relationships: Trust and rapport are essential for meaningful change. A strong human connection provides encouragement and personalised guidance that a machine cannot replicate.

How AI Falls Short with Human Connection

Lack of empathy: While AI can simulate empathy through programmed responses, it cannot truly understand or feel emotions, leaving interactions emotionally hollow.

Limited emotional context: AI lacks the ability to fully grasp complex human experiences, such as grief, fear, or hope, which are central to personal and professional transformation.

Transactional interactions: AI operates within predefined frameworks, often reducing conversations to problem-solving rather than fostering deeper connection or understanding.

Lack of energy exchange: Human connection involves shared energy, warmth, and presence – qualities that AI cannot replicate, regardless of its sophistication.

Vulnerability: While AI may provide tools or insights, it cannot create the emotional safety needed for individuals to open up and explore their challenges authentically.

How Coaching Supports Human Connection

•  Empathy and compassion: A conscious coach will bring genuine care and understanding, meeting you where you are at and helping you navigate emotions with kindness and patience.

•  Holding the space: A coach can create an environment of psychological safety, where you feel supported to explore challenges, process emotions, and take meaningful risks.

•  Presence and active listening: Coaching involves active and deep listening, not just to your words but to your tone, energy and emotions, ensuring you feel truly seen and heard.

•  Tailored support: Unlike AI, coaches can adapt their approach based on your unique story, offering personalised strategies and emotional connection that foster trust.

Energy exchange: Human connection involves a dynamic exchange of energy, where the coach’s presence, encouragement, and belief in you inspire confidence and momentum.

Reason #3: Accountability

Accountability is typically one of the main reasons people come to coaching. Despite reading the books, taking the online courses, perhaps even knowing what they need to do, they are not taking action. And without taking action, you cannot move forward. Accountability means that you are much more likely to:

•  Turn intentions into reality: Accountability bridges the gap between setting goals and achieving them, ensuring progress through consistent follow-through.

•  Build momentum: Knowing someone is tracking your progress motivates action, even during moments of doubt, fear, or resistance.

•  Overcome procrastination: Transformation often requires navigating challenges and stepping outside of your comfort zone; accountability helps you stay committed when the process feels tough.

•  Sustain your focus: With so many distractions in personal and professional life, clear accountability ensures that priorities remain aligned with your long-term vision.

How AI Falls Short with Accountability

Lack of emotional understanding: AI can track progress or send reminders, but it lacks the ability to empathise with setbacks or understand the emotional reasons behind inaction.

Lack of personalised encouragement: AI doesn’t provide the human warmth, motivation, and belief in your potential that energise you to push forward during challenging times.

Rigidity: AI accountability tools use predefined frameworks that don’t adapt to the complexities of your life or unexpected obstacles.

No relationship of trust: True accountability is rooted in trust and partnership, which AI cannot replicate through transactional interactions.

Limited depth: While AI can track tasks, it cannot explore deeper questions like why you’re stuck, what fears may be holding you back, or how to realign your efforts with your values.

How Coaching Supports Accountability

The power of another person: Knowing that another person is invested in your progress creates a natural desire to follow through. Many of us don’t want to disappoint someone we trust or ‘show up empty-handed,’ which makes us more likely to complete tasks or ‘do the homework.’

Empathy and understanding: A coach works with you to uncover the emotional or psychological barriers behind procrastination, helping you reframe challenges and stay on track.

Personalised motivation: Coaches tailor their approach to your unique needs, offering encouragement, positive reinforcement and strategies that align with your goals and values.

Working through setbacks: A coach creates a safe, non-judgemental space to discuss setbacks or doubts without fear, helping you process and move forward with clarity.

Adaptability: Coaches can provide real-time adjustments to your plan, helping you stay flexible and resilient in the face of life’s inevitable changes.

Celebrating wins: Coaches acknowledge your progress, no matter how small, reinforcing your confidence and commitment to long-term transformation.

AI and Coaching: A Powerful Partnership for Transformation

What I am advocating here is not that you avoid using AI to support you with a transformation but to employ a combined approach. Each brings its own strengths: AI provides efficiency, structure, and data-driven insights, while coaching helps deliver the deeper truth, human connection and accountability essential for profound and lasting change. Together, they create a dynamic partnership that supports growth on every level. Here are a couple of examples for context:

Enhancing Emotional Wellbeing

Someone pursuing mindfulness or emotional growth might use an AI-powered meditation app (like Calm or Headspace) for daily mindfulness exercises or stress management. In parallel, their coach helps them dig deeper into emotional triggers, unpack limiting beliefs, and develop coping mechanisms tailored to their unique needs. The AI delivers tools for practice, while the coach ensures these practices align with the individual’s broader goals and helps them process emotions more effectively.

Planning a Career Change

A professional considering a career change could leverage AI career platforms (like LinkedIn’s AI tools or Skill AI) to identify trends and analyse skills gaps. AI tools can suggest online courses, create CVs tailored to specific industries, or simulate interview scenarios. At the same time, a career coach provides perspective on how the transition fits with the individual’s values, passions, and long-term goals. The coach helps them build confidence, network strategically, and navigate the emotional challenges of leaving a familiar role for something new.

Ultimately, the integration of AI and coaching allows individuals to benefit from the best of both worlds: the precision of technology and the heart of human connection. Together, they create a transformative experience that not only drives success but also fosters fulfillment, resilience, and growth. In an AI-fueLled world, coaching remains the irreplaceable human element that brings transformation to life.
