Career Change FAQs: Answers to some of your most pressing questions

What is a career change?

A career change is a conscious choice to move from your current job, employer or industry into something new. There are varying degrees of career change. Some involve full retraining and extensive preparation, whilst others can simply mean doing the same job in a different sector (one which is more closely aligned to your True Self and your purpose). A career change could involve a staged transition over time from where you are now to something completely new. This can manage any potential overwhelm and enable you to maintain a regular income stream.

How do I know it’s time for a career change?

Typically, once you have explored all other options to feel more connected, calm or confident within your current role. And/or you have an overwhelming inner knowing that you are meant to be doing something else (even if you aren’t clear on what that is yet).  This may be after 20 years in the same type of job, or it could be after just a few months. I do always recommend that people give a new job enough time to ride out the initial and very natural discomfort which can often come from being in a new role or environment.

Am I too old for a career change?

You are never too old for a career change! Granted, that certain professions may require a lengthier period of training which might preclude certain age groups. But, it is usually just a held belief that you cannot make a career change after your thirties or forties. I am living proof of this, having changed my career from being a commercial director and business consultant into becoming a coach at the age of 42.

What are the steps to successfully change careers?

As the chart above illustrates, there are 7 key stages to successfully change careers:

  1. Become aware of the problem – simply acknowledge that something is not right for you and listening to your body and to your instinct
  2. Prepare the way – get body, mind and spirit to a calmer place so that you aren’t reacting and making choices from a heightened emotional state
  3. Connect with the deeper self – if you want to make a profound change you need to uncover your true identity (your values, your essence, your soul)
  4. Explore / assess your options – there are usually a range of possibilities which you can assess in terms of their alignment with your deeper self
  5. Declare the change – formally make the decision that you are leaving (even just to yourself) so that you can then focus your time and energy on the new
  6. Plan the change – set your intention and some goals to move you forward over time and budget for a period of transition or investing in retraining etc
  7. Make the change – now you can get started putting the wheels in motion by leaving your current job and taking action steps towards your goals

It is crucial not to jump straight from stage 1 to stage 7 and miss out everything in between. This is what keeps people stuck in the same cycle – going from job to job hoping that something will be better this time. If you finally want to make a more profound step change, you must go through the other stages. That is what this career change hub has been set up to help you with.

How can I change careers with no experience?

Changing careers without experience in a particular field can feel challenging but it is achievable. Here’s how:

  • Take an inventory on your transferable skills: Focus on those such as  communication, problem-solving, or leadership that can be applied to your new field.
  • Upskill: Take online courses, earn certifications, or attend workshops to build relevant knowledge
  • Gain experience: Volunteer, freelance, or take internships to get hands-on practice and build your portfolio
  • Network: Connect with your contacts and industry professionals on LinkedIn or by attending events, and seeking advice from trusted ex colleagues
  • Tailor your CV / resume: Reframe your past experience to align with your target industry’s needs
  • Show passion: Demonstrating enthusiasm, commitment, and a willingness to learn can go a really long way!

What are the risks of a career change?

Like so many things in life, a career change does carry a risk. For most people this is a financial one and also a risk of failing and looking silly. But, if you go through the necessary steps and go about a career change in a highly conscious way, some (if not all) if this risk can be mitigated. Also consider, what is actually more of a risk for you – this or being in the same position you are in now in 12 months time?

What are the benefits of a career change?

The benefits of a career change (again, if you invest time in gaining true clarity on what is in deepest alignment) are extensive! Most notably:

  • A feeling of fulfilment and joy which you get to experience every day
  • A sense of purpose from doing the work you have been put here on earth to do
  • The opportunity to grow and expand into new areas, meet new people and gain new experiences
  • The satisfaction of knowing you are working towards your true potential, using the gifts you have been given
  • Greater wellbeing from feeling calmer and more at peace in your working life
  • A feeling of empowerment as you take action to change a situation which is no longer working for you instead of putting up with it
  • More harmonious relationships – both personally and professionally as you lift yourself out of the negative headspace you are currently in
  • A newfound sense of courage from taking the leap, which can have a knock-on effect across all areas of your life

How long does it take to change careers?

If you are changing jobs within your current organisation, it might take a matter of weeks. Alternatively, if you are moving into a new sector and needing to retrain it could take a number of years. Remember that you can always transition your career over time rather than making a big shift.

How do I financially prepare for a career change?

When I made my career changes, I always did some financial planning to give me the stability and breathing space I needed to explore what was next and to get started with retraining and setting up my business. I always recommend starting with a survival budget to see what you need as a minimum every month to live on. Then plan to have enough savings to cover you for a certain number of months. You might also need to budget for certain equipment, licenses or qualifications.

What are the most common fears of making a career change?

The fear of losing a steady income has to be the number one fear of making a career change. Closely followed by the fear of making a mistake (and looking foolish). If you are experiencing either of these, you are certainly not alone! I urge you to consider, however, what might happen if you don’t take action and what your fears might be in that case? Acknowledge and honour these fears by journaling about them.

How can spirituality support me with making a career change?

Spirituality can play a massive role in supporting you with a career change. And similarly, the need for a career change can support you in embracing your spirituality. Here are some of the ways I have used spirituality to support myself and clients through career changes:

  • Understanding and showing up to your purpose from a deeper place
  • Harnessing the Higher Self as a way of building confidence and overcoming fears and doubts
  • Connecting with our intuition for inner guidance and to get away from the debilitating effects of overthinking
  • Recognising the source of gifts and talents to take greater ownership of them
  • Providing supportive practices to maintain balance and inner peace
